I Like It, I Love It : Pop! Curl Color Gel
Fun fact: my favorite color is blue. You probably wouldn't know that for sure now but during my formative years, it was all I knew. Blue clothes, blue accessories, blue snacks, blue drinks. If it came in blue, I was in love with it. So it's no surprise that during my college years I was dead set on dyeing my hair midnight blue. Well...it never happened (I am 100% sure my mom and hairstylist formed a plan to make sure it didn't come to pass although they deny it.) However, if you've been following my blog from the beginning you'll know that I'm out on a quest to make all of my shattered dreams come true these days.
What are you talking about Brandi? Right, so for the past few years my hair had been dyed with a semipermanent red color that I LOVED but once I decided to transition to natural, I let all of my color grow out as I was trimming away my relaxed ends. By the time I decided to big chop I had absolutely no color left and I miss it! However, I don't want to rush to dye my hair again because I'm still trying to figure out my newly natural hair. Soooo... what is a girl to do?
I think I've found the answer in Pop! Curl color hair gel!
What is it? Pop! Curl is a hair gel made with aloe vera and temporary color that is specifically formulated for dark hair. Say what? Yes, that's right. So there is no need to bleach or lighten your hair with chemicals beforehand.
What's the appeal?
If you're like me and tour like to play with your look then this is the product for you. Pop! Curl will last about 3-5 days and washes out in one shampoo. With 9 colors to choose from, the combinations are endless!
How do you use it?
After washing your hair and applying your favorite leave-in or curl shaping product, use your index finger and thumb to disperse the color from the ends upward towards your scalp. After you've applied the preferred amount, style your hair as desired.
My experience
The website offers the option of buying one each color separately in a two-ounce container or a mini trio of three colors in a one-ounce container. Because the gel is made by hand, my first choice in color was sold out so initially, I purchased the "shimmer" mini trio and then the "custom" trio with the colors of my choice. This left me with the following colors:
Of course, I used a mixture of midnight and orchid to make all of my blue hair dreams come to pass. We won't talk about the two hours it took me just to twist out all of my hair. Ugh! Anyways, here are my takeaways:
Although the color is shimmery and bright, and I somehow managed to get it all over my bathroom counter, I noticed that it didn't leave glitter residue behind when I wiped it up. It also washed off completely when I washed my hands and left behind no stains. As a gel, the product holds well and didn't make my hair hard or flaky/crunchy so that was also a plus.
After my hair was dry, I was able to see more of the color on my hair. Of course, it is easiest to view the color in direct sunlight or super bright light so don't feel discouraged if you can't really see the color at the time of application. If/when you touch your hair after the gel dries, you are bound to get some color transfer on your fingers. No big since the color washes right off, just remember to keep your fingers out of your hair as much as possible! You don't want to mess up your poppin' new color! Other than that, I have not had any issues so far with color transferring to my clothes, not even on my bonnet when I slept.
The colors themselves are all glittery and iridescent but in normal, indoor light it isn't very noticeable so you may be able to pull it off in an office setting (at your own risk).
All in all, so far, so good. I'm a fan of the product and definitely can't wait to try out my other colors and make more combinations and I'll be sure to share them so follow me on social media for thos updates! If I missed any questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
